Many things contribute to a gorgeous head of healthy hair, one of the most important being scalp health. When your scalp isn’t as healthy as it should be, that can lead to your hair becoming less supple or even cause it to begin thinning. Here are some things you can do to promote scalp health…
Eat healthy with a diet rich in iron and protein, including menu items such as beef, wild caught salmon, nuts and seeds. A scalp healthy diet should also include vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin A (which can be found, for instance, in carrots and sweet potatoes) and vitamin C (in citrus fruits, berries and dark leafy vegetables) can both help facilitate the circulation of oxygen to the scalp. Folic acid, which can be found in lentils, broccoli, asparagus and avocados, promotes cell renewal and helps prevent thinning and discoloration of hair. Too much sugar consumption can lead to dandruff, but zinc – which can be found in legumes and certain shellfish – can help keep dandruff at bay.
Keep in mind that, as part of your body, your scalp can also benefit from all the things your body benefits from, including lowering stress, getting adequate sleep and exercising.
Gently brushing hair can stimulate scalp circulation and help distribute essential oils throughout the scalp. Washing your hair too often can have the opposite effect, stripping hair of its natural oils. However, washing your hair too infrequently can be problematic too, leading to oil build-up on the scalp, which can stifle healthy hair growth. A minimum of once a week to every few days, depending on your hair type, is a good rule of thumb. The hair care professionals at Colors Hair Studio in New Smyrna Beach will be happy to recommend the right frequency, shampoo and other hair care products for your hair type.
Also, we live in Florida and the sun can be harsh. So don’t forget to protect your scalp from too much sun!
