Hair Myths Debunked

There are myths from Bigfoot, to those creepsters in the woods that everyone tells campfire stories about, but the most frightening of all might very well be hair myths. Fear not my fellow haters of scary hair. Let’s bust up some bloodcurdling hair myths, shall we?

Myth: A dry scalp causes dandruff

Nope! Believe it or not, dandruff is typically caused by an oily scalp and can usually be kept at bay with regular use of dandruff shampoo.

Myth: You should change your hair products every so often because hair will begin to become immune to them.

This is also far from the truth. Hair care products do not lose their efficiency on your hair over time. The truth is that hair challenges are usually due to changes in your environment (such as things like harsh sun, frequent exposure to chlorine or overdoing it with heat styling) or lacking nutrition and your subsequent changes in hair care needs.

Myth: Hair will grow faster the more often you cut it.

Although you can keep hair healthier with regular trimming and promote healthy hair growth with a diet rich in nutrients, hair typically grows at the same pace – around a half an inch a month.

Myth: Two gray hairs will grow back for every one you pluck.

Since each hair strand grows from its own single follicle, this is literally impossible.

Myth: You need to wash your hair every day.

Each hair type is different, requiring different washing frequency, but a good rule of thumb is that every day washing is too frequent and can thereby strip hair of essential oils.

Myth: The more you brush your hair the healthier and shinier it will be. So 100 strokes a day is recommended.

While gentle hair brushing can distribute natural oils, making straight hair shiny, too much vigorous brushing can cause hair damage. Additionally, certain hair types (such as curly) are often best left to dry naturally with a little bit of curl definer for best results.
